Fear of the unknown. You are at a cross-road in your life: to the left, a path to parenthood. To the right, you choose to remain child-free. And here you are stuck in the middle, unable to make a move, to take action. You have to ask yourself, “Why?”
I recently had the opportunity to speak to a single woman, a professional, in her prime years. Her profile? Educated. Sharp. Witty. And afraid. She wants desperately to be a mother but does not know how to get from point A to Point B. Speaking with her, I discovered that part of her inaction came from her feelings of disempowerment and that emotional state evolved from a general lack of knowledge about the medical and legal aspects of reproduction.
My advice to all my clients is to be your own health advocate. Read as much information as you can about the process for becoming a parent. A great starting point is the American Society for Reproductive Medicine at www.asrm.org. Click on For Patients section or go directly to their linked site at www.reproductivefacts.org.
Read. Understand. Learn about the process. The more you know, the more you will be able to get out of the middle of the road!
